The circular aperture provides an attractive out-of-focus background when shooting at maximum aperture; ideal for creating a sense of depth and isolating your subject from the background.

The ultrasonic motor (USM) uses ultrasonic frequency vibrations to trigger autofocus sensitively, at high speed and with almost no noise. By applying the force of a torque, it precisely retains the focusing lens group, preventing it from overshooting. Manual focusing is available at all times without having to switch off the autofocus.

Large f/2.8 aperture provides excellent results in low light situations. Aperture remains constant throughout the focal range, allowing the 27-88mm zoom (35mm equivalent) to be used without having to slow down the shutter speed.

The EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM features Canon's 3-point Image Stabilizer (IS). Ideal for handheld work, the Image Stabilizer allows you to use three-point slower shutter speeds with no perceptible increase in image sharpness.
